In short

Kazakh citizens do not need a visa for Argentina, but the visa-free stay is only up to 30 days — a third of what most neighbouring post-Soviet countries get. A birth trip lasts 2–3 months, so do the date maths before you buy tickets: the extension at Migraciones must be filed before your stay expires, and after the birth you apply for residence.

Kazakhstan does not recognise dual citizenship. A child born in Argentina is Argentine by birth and, if both parents are Kazakh citizens, a citizen of Kazakhstan at the same time. There is no Kazakh embassy in Buenos Aires: Argentina is covered by the embassy in Brasília, and some civil-registry services are available online through eGov.kz.

Entry: 30 days and how not to overstay

In the official Cancillería list, Kazakhstan is in the group of countries with a visa-free stay of up to 30 days (the agreement has been in force since November 1, 2014). The general Migraciones rule for tourists is an extension “for a similar period”, but only while your stay is still valid. Once it has expired it cannot be extended — you only get an exit permit.

WhenWhat to do
Before buying ticketsCount: arrival date + 30 days + extension — is it enough to cover the birth and the baby’s registration?
Last 10 days of your stayFile the extension (prórroga) with Migraciones
After the birthRegister the baby and apply for the parents’ residence — from then on you are covered by the precaria

If the numbers do not add up (for example, you arrive at 28–30 weeks), discuss your options before you fly: a different arrival date within airline limits, or a different immigration status. A “run to Uruguay and back” late in pregnancy is a bad idea: it is hard on your health, and re-entry is at the border officer’s discretion. At the border you may be asked for a return ticket, an address and health insurance — see our article on insurance during pregnancy.

Flights and connections

There are no direct flights from Kazakhstan. Typical routes go through Istanbul, Dubai or Doha (often with a stop in São Paulo or Rio), or through European hubs.

  • Airside connections in Istanbul, Dubai, Doha and Schengen airports generally do not require a visa for Kazakh citizens. Check the rules of the specific airport if you have separate tickets and must re-check your luggage.
  • The USA does not work for transit: there is no sterile transit zone, so you would need a US visa.
  • A stop in Brazil on the same flight usually stays within the transit area. If you leave the airport or connect on a separate ticket, check in advance whether you need a Brazilian visa.
  • After week 28, airlines usually ask for a doctor’s letter, and close to week 36 they may refuse boarding. Details in flying to Argentina to give birth.

Documents before departure and apostille in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan and Argentina are both parties to the Hague Convention, so Kazakh documents only need an apostille for use in Argentina.

  1. IDs and passports: international passports with plenty of validity left; take your national ID card too — the embassy will need it.
  2. Marriage certificate and your own birth certificates — apostilled. Without the marriage certificate, the Registro Civil can list the father only through an acknowledgement of paternity.
  3. Police clearance certificates for both parents — apostilled and recent (for residence, their validity is usually counted from the date of issue).
  4. Documents from justice bodies can be apostilled through the “E-apostille” service on eGov.kz — in one business day, as a PDF with a QR code. It is not guaranteed that every Argentine authority accepts an electronic apostille, so for Migraciones a paper apostille on the original is the safer choice.
  5. Digital signature and eGov access: check the validity of your EDS (it is issued for one year) and that your phone number is linked — from Argentina this is your main channel to Kazakh public services.

In Argentina, any document in Russian or Kazakh must be translated by a sworn translator — Migraciones does not accept translations made at home. What else to arrange in advance: Powers of attorney before departure.

The path in Argentina

From here the path is the same for everyone: the birth, registration at the Registro Civil (within 40 days by law), the baby’s DNI and Argentine passport, then the parents’ residence via RaDEX. Since DNU 366/2025, the parent of an Argentine citizen gets temporary rather than immediate permanent residence — see Parents’ residence and DNI. The whole route step by step is in the guide Birth in Argentina: step by step.

A small but important point for Kazakh families: the Argentine birth certificate has no “patronymic” field, while Kazakh documents do (including the “-uly/-kyzy” form). Decide in advance how to write your baby’s name — see Patronymics in foreign documents.

06

The child’s citizenship and dual citizenship

  • Both parents are Kazakh citizens. Under the Law on Citizenship, the child is a citizen of Kazakhstan regardless of the place of birth.
  • One parent is Kazakh and the other is a foreigner, and the family lives permanently outside Kazakhstan: citizenship is determined by a written agreement of the parents. If one parent has permanent residence in Kazakhstan, the child generally becomes a Kazakh citizen.
  • Dual citizenship is not recognised: for Kazakh authorities the child is only a Kazakh citizen and uses only Kazakh documents inside Kazakhstan. The Argentine citizenship does not disappear because of this: Argentine citizenship by birth generally cannot be renounced — let alone on a child’s behalf.
  • Consequences. The law requires an adult citizen who “acquires” a foreign citizenship to report it within 30 days and surrender the Kazakh passport, and using foreign documents carries liability. How these rules apply to a child who received Argentine citizenship by birth has not been officially clarified, and practice varies. Before applying, ask the embassy this question in writing and keep the answer.
07

Where to apply: the embassy and eGov

There is no Kazakh embassy in Argentina. Argentina is covered by the Kazakh embassy in Brasília; there is an honorary consulate in Buenos Aires, but it is generally not authorised to process citizenship or passports — check before you go.

  • Registering the birth in Kazakhstan: parents can choose to register it through a Kazakh mission abroad or with the civil registry in Kazakhstan. The application can be filed online via eGov.kz — about 3 business days (5 if filed in person). If more than two months have passed since the birth, you attach an explanation of the delay.
  • What you need: the Argentine birth certificate (partida) with the Cancillería apostille and a certified translation, the marriage certificate and the parents’ documents.
  • The apostille on the partida is requested online through the TAD system; get a current copy from the Registro Civil first.
08

The child’s passport and travelling home

  • An Argentine child leaves Argentina on an Argentine passport — apply at RENAPER (there is an express option if your tickets are already booked).
  • To enter Kazakhstan as a Kazakh citizen, the child needs a Kazakh document: a passport or a certificate of return issued by the embassy. Applications are made in person, so plan a trip to Brasília (and check whether you need a Brazilian visa).
  • Entering Kazakhstan on the Argentine passport of a child already registered as a Kazakh citizen is not advisable: that is exactly the “use of foreign documents” situation.
  • If the child does not travel with both parents, leaving Argentina requires a notarised authorisation from the other parent.
09

Scenario: we are staying in Argentina

Many families are in no hurry to go back after the birth: they apply for residence and rent long-term. Then the key is to leave no loose ends at home.

  • The baby’s registration — online. The birth can be registered via eGov.kz without travelling to Kazakhstan; before you fly, make sure your EDS is renewed and your phone is linked.
  • Powers of attorney for relatives (to rent out or sell your home, collect documents at a public service centre, handle banking) are easiest to sign with a notary in Kazakhstan before you leave. A power of attorney signed in Argentina before an escribano must be apostilled at the Cancillería and translated in Kazakhstan, and for some actions it may not be accepted.
  • Police certificates for renewing residence: find out in advance whether you can get them via eGov and apostille them electronically — otherwise you will need a power of attorney for a relative.
  • Consular registration: if you live abroad long-term, register with the embassy — it makes later requests easier.
10

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Kazakhstan gets 90 visa-free days like its neighbours, and filing the extension too late.
  • Going to the honorary consulate for the baby’s passport — passports are handled by the embassy in Brasília.
  • Not renewing the EDS before flying and losing access to eGov.
  • Different Latin spellings of the surname in the parents’ passports and the baby’s partida.
  • Not deciding on the patronymic in advance — it is hard to fix later in both countries.
  • Apostilling only some documents in Kazakhstan, and then having to order the police certificate remotely.

How we help

We calculate your permitted stay, check your Kazakh documents before you fly, and handle the birth, registration, the baby’s DNI and passport, and the parents’ residence. All countries are listed on the Birth by country page, and embassy and translator contacts are in the directory. The “Baby’s documents back home” package ($290) takes care of registering the child in your home country, and full support from arrival to documents is the Premium package.

Other countries: Belarus, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Israel.

Frequently asked questions

Do Kazakh citizens need a visa to give birth in Argentina?

No, but the visa-free stay for Kazakh citizens is only up to 30 days. A birth trip lasts 2–3 months, so the extension (prórroga) must be filed with Migraciones in the last 10 days of your stay: once it has expired it cannot be extended.

Do Kazakh documents need an apostille for a birth in Argentina?

Yes: Kazakhstan and Argentina are both parties to the Hague Convention, so an apostille is enough. The E-apostille on eGov.kz takes one business day, but for Migraciones a paper apostille on the original is safer. Translations are done by a sworn translator in Argentina.

Will a baby born in Argentina to Kazakh parents have dual citizenship?

The child is Argentine by birth and, if both parents are Kazakh citizens, also a citizen of Kazakhstan. But Kazakhstan does not recognise dual citizenship: for Kazakh authorities the child is only a Kazakh citizen and uses only Kazakh documents inside Kazakhstan.

Where do I get a Kazakh passport for a baby born in Argentina?

At the Kazakh embassy in Brasília: there is no Kazakh embassy in Buenos Aires, and the honorary consulate is generally not authorised to process passports. Applications are made in person. The birth itself can be registered online via eGov.kz in about 3 business days.
