In short

A foreign woman can give birth in Argentina, and a baby born in the country is an Argentine citizen by birth regardless of the parents’ nationality (Ley 346). Most families give birth in a private clinic in Buenos Aires: since 2025–2026 foreigners without residency pay for non-emergency care in both city and national public hospitals.

A typical budget for a 2.5–3-month trip is USD 13,500–34,800 plus a USD 5,000–10,000 reserve for complications. After the birth: registration within 40 days, a free DNI for the baby, a passport, then temporary residency for the parents for up to 3 years.

Where to give birth

  • Private clinics are the main option for foreigners: Suizo Argentina, Otamendi, Mater Dei, Hospital Alemán, Trinidad Palermo and others. Comparison — “Where to give birth in Buenos Aires”.
  • Buenos Aires city hospitals have charged foreigners without residency for non-emergency care since March 2025 (Resolución 1054/MSGC/2025).
  • National hospitals have required insurance or prepayment from foreigners without permanent residency since August 2026 (Resolución 1066/2026). Emergency care, including obstetric, cannot be refused, but a bill may follow.
  • Sanatorio Finochietto closed its maternity unit in May 2026 and is no longer an option.

Travel insurance usually does not cover childbirth — see “Health insurance in pregnancy”.

05

Documents before you fly

Apostilles on marriage and birth certificates and on criminal record certificates are issued only in the issuing country, so do them at home. Do not translate in advance: in Argentina a sworn translator (traductor público) does it. Full list — “Documents for giving birth: before you fly”.

06

After the birth: the baby’s documents

  1. Birth registration (partida) — within 40 days at the Civil Registry (Ley 26.413).
  2. DNI — free up to 6 months of age.
  3. Argentine passport — ARS 100,000 regular, 200,000 urgent, 330,000 express (RENAPER fees since March 2026).
  4. Parents’ home-country documents — at the consulate; for Russia — “Russian citizenship for the baby”.

Details — “The baby’s documents”.

07

Parents’ residency and citizenship

Parents of an Argentine child get temporary family-reunification residency for up to 3 years (DNU 366/2025); there is no longer automatic permanent residency. Under the new rules parents may apply for citizenship after 2 years of continuous legal residency without leaving the country, but this rule is being challenged in court.
