Giving birth in Argentina for Russian citizens in 2026: entry, money, documents
No visa is needed, but Russian bank cards do not work and apostilles are only issued in Russia. Step by step: what to prepare at home, how to fly, give birth and get the baby documents from both countries.

In short
Russian citizens do not need a visa for Argentina: you can stay up to 90 days on your passport. A baby born in Argentina is an Argentine citizen from birth, and the parents become eligible for residency. Russian citizenship and a Russian passport for the baby are processed at the Russian consulate in Buenos Aires.
Three things Russians tend to learn too late: Russian bank cards do not work here, apostilles on civil-registry documents and criminal record certificates are only issued in Russia, and there are no direct flights — you need an airline that will accept you at your stage of pregnancy. Below is the order of steps from deciding to travel to the baby’s Russian passport.
Entry: no visa, but be ready for questions
Russians enter Argentina visa-free. The length of stay is set on entry — usually up to 90 days. It can be extended at Migraciones, but only before it expires. After the birth the parents apply for residency, which solves the question of stay — see “Parents’ residency and DNI”.
At the border you may be asked about the purpose of the trip. Pregnancy is not a ground to refuse entry, but it helps to carry everything that explains your plan:
- a return or open ticket and an accommodation booking for the whole stay;
- a letter or contract from the clinic and your doctor’s contacts in Buenos Aires;
- your pregnancy records and a fit-to-fly letter in English;
- proof of funds for the stay and the birth (statement, cards, cash);
- health coverage: under DNU 366/2025 foreigners declare it on entry. Travel policies usually exclude childbirth — see “Health insurance in pregnancy”.
Be straightforward: “I came to give birth, here is the clinic and the apartment.” Inconsistent answers raise more questions than the pregnancy itself.
Flights: connections only
There are no direct flights from Russia to Buenos Aires. Typical routes go via Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or Addis Ababa and take 24–30 hours. Each airline has its own rules for pregnant passengers: from week 28–29 you need a doctor’s letter no older than 10 days, and after week 35–36 you will not be boarded. On a ticket with two carriers the stricter rule applies.
We recommend flying at weeks 28–32 on a changeable ticket. The rules of Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Air Europa are compared in “How to prepare for birth in Buenos Aires”.
Money: Russian bank cards do not work
This is the main thing to solve before you fly. Visa and Mastercard cards issued by Russian banks do not work abroad, Mir is not accepted in Argentina, and Western Union does not send money from Russia.
- A card from a bank in another country is the most convenient option for shops, taxis, pharmacies and ATMs.
- Cash US dollars — still commonly used for rent and clinic payments. Bring new, undamaged notes. Amounts over $10,000 per person must be declared on entry.
- An emergency reserve of $5,000–10,000 for neonatal care or complications should be available immediately.

Documents to prepare in Russia
Russian apostilles are almost impossible to obtain from Argentina — they are issued only in Russia, in person or via a representative with a power of attorney. So everything below is done before the flight, ideally from week 20.
| Document | Where the apostille is issued | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate | Civil registry (ZAGS) of the region that issued it; fee 2,500 RUB | usually up to 5 working days; an old certificate may need replacing with a duplicate |
| Parents’ birth certificates | ZAGS of the issuing region | the same |
| Criminal record certificates for both parents | Ministry of Internal Affairs; order the certificate via Gosuslugi or an MFC | certificate up to 30 days, apostille about 5 more working days |
| International passports | — | check validity: the whole trip plus six months |
Order the criminal record certificate closer to departure: Migraciones checks how recent it is. You do not need translations in Russia — Argentine authorities require a sworn translator here anyway (see “Sworn translation of documents”).
Also plan powers of attorney before you fly: for a relative in Russia to handle your bank, taxes, property and the baby’s future documents. How to word them so you do not need a second one — in “Powers of attorney before departure”.
In Argentina: the birth and the baby’s Argentine documents
- Clinic and doctor — private clinics in Buenos Aires; the contract is signed around weeks 32–34. How to choose — “Where to give birth in Buenos Aires”.
- Birth registration at the Registro Civil, then the first DNI (free) and the Argentine passport — see “Your baby’s documents after birth”.
- Names and patronymic. Argentine records have no patronymic field, and Russian documents are based on the translated Argentine certificate. How to register the baby so everything matches — “Patronymics in foreign documents”.
- Parents’ residency — on the ground of being parents of an Argentine child, with a precaria while the case is processed.
The baby’s Russian documents
If both parents are Russian citizens, the baby is Russian by birth. The Russian consulate in Buenos Aires marks citizenship on the Russian translation of the Argentine certificate and then issues a passport. If only one parent is Russian, the baby is admitted to citizenship with the other parent’s consent, which takes longer. There is no need to give up Argentine citizenship.
Book the consulate as soon as you have the apostilled certificate: slots can be weeks ahead. Details — “Russian citizenship for a child born in Argentina”.
If you stay in Argentina
- SNILS for the baby does not appear automatically — a relative in Russia applies with a power of attorney, which is easy to sign at the same consulate. Step by step — “SNILS for a child born in Argentina”.
- Notifying a residence permit or second citizenship. A Russian citizen who obtains foreign residency or citizenship must notify the Ministry of Internal Affairs; check the current deadlines for people living abroad when you file.
- Next — permanent residency and Argentine citizenship for the parents: see “Argentine citizenship in 2026”.
Common mistakes
- No working card — and no access to money on day one.
- No apostilles done at home — from Argentina that means months and powers of attorney.
- A non-changeable ticket for week 35.
- Different Latin spellings of the surname in the spouses’ passports and the marriage certificate.
- Booking the baby’s passport at the consulate before citizenship is marked.
- Counting on a free birth in a public hospital: since 2026 foreigners without permanent residency pay for planned care.
