Money, transfers and crypto

Dollar rate and currency controls

Since April 2025 individuals can buy dollars without the old limit; the official, MEP and “blue” rates now differ by a few per cent. Today’s rates — on Ámbito.

Western Union

Receive money from abroad: cash at agents (in pesos) with a passport, to a bank account or card. Airport branches accept a passport.

Wise

Transfers to an Argentine bank account in pesos.

Crypto: the CNV registry

Use only platforms in the official CNV registry of virtual-asset providers (PSAV). Industry reviews in 2026 list Ripio, Belo, Lemon, Binance, Bitso and OKX — check their status in the registry yourself. Most require a DNI or CUIT. Street exchange (cuevas) carries fraud and counterfeit risk.

Mercado Pago

Argentina’s most popular wallet, but opening it requires a DNI. Until then pay by card or cash.

Phone, transport, pharmacies

Mobile: Personal, Claro, Movistar

Prepaid SIMs are sold with a passport at operator stores. A Personal eSIM can be bought online with a foreign card.

SUBE transport card

Subway, buses, trains. Sold at kiosks and stations; registering the card lowers fares and protects the balance.

Taxis and ride apps

Uber, Cabify (card only), DiDi; licensed taxis via the BA Taxi app.

Pharmacies

The largest chain is Farmacity. Many medicines need a prescription from an Argentine doctor.

Mi Argentina

Government app: RENAPER appointments, digital DNI. Fully usable once you have a DNI.
